Why Do Ceramic Coatings Fail?

Ceramic coatings can fail for various reasons, despite their acclaimed durability and protective qualities. Here are the most common reasons why ceramic coatings fail:

  1. Application Environment: When applying ceramic coatings, following the manufacturers guidelines regarding application conditions is crucial for best results. Applying ceramic coatings in unsuitable environmental conditions such as high humidity, direct sunlight, or extreme temperatures can negatively affect the application, curing process, and the final performance of the coating.

  2. Improper Preparation: The process leading up to a ceramic coating application is critical. If your vehicle isn't thoroughly decontaminated and free of oils, waxes, or residues, the ceramic coating will not adhere properly. This can lead to premature failure of the coating.

  3. Incorrect Application Technique: Applying ceramic coatings isn’t as simple as “wax on, wax off”. The application requires skill, timing, and attention to detail. If the coating is over applied, under applied, or spread unevenly, it can lead to areas that are prone to failure, streaky (high spots), or inconsistent performance.

  4. Quality of the Coating: At this point, there are thousands of ceramic coating companies, but all ceramic coatings are NOT created equal. In fact, there are very few professional grade ceramic coating manufacturer’s in the world. Some of the most reputable brands in the US being IGL Coatings, SystemX, and Ceramic Pro. Retail grade, lower-quality coatings do not offer the same level of durability or protection as professional grade ones. Although the product cost, required training and certification, and increased difficulty of application may be seen as a down side, this is the trade off for quality.

  5. Environmental Factors: Exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as extreme heat, UV rays, salt, pollutants, and even frequent washing with improper techniques can break down ceramic coatings over time. While ceramic coatings are designed to withstand such conditions better than traditional waxes or sealants, prolonged exposure can still impact their longevity.

  6. Lack of Maintenance: Proper maintenance is essential to prolong the life of a ceramic coating. Ceramic coatings will keep your vehicle cleaner for longer and easier to clean, but they do not eliminate the need to wash and maintain your vehicle. Proper routine maintenance includes using pH-neutral car wash soaps, regular hand washing, touch-less car washing, avoiding abrasive cleaners or brushes (automatic car washes), and returning to your ceramic coating installer annually for a ceramic coating inspection, top-coat, or maintenance service.

  7. Substrate Issues: The least common issue we see, but still important to note. If there are underlying issues with the paint or clear coat on a vehicle (such as delamination, heavy oxidation, or poorly applied paintwork), these can affect how well the ceramic coating adheres and performs. In such cases, addressing the underlying substrate issues before applying the coating is crucial.
